DVR to Router Configure

DVR to Router Configure

Many of our customers already own a Video Surveillance System and they want to see their cameras from a remote location. There are a few ways to do this. First you want to make sure your DVR has a remote viewing function. The easiest way to tell is by looking at the back panel and see if there is a Network/LAN jack.. If you already have this jack, the DVR should have come with software too. If so, this will be needed to change or reset any passwords. We go to alot of jobs and find that the customer's DVR is password protected, and we must have this info to configure your existing DVR to the internet. Another thing we need is the user name and password for your Router. This is needed to open up a port for the DVR to view from anywhere in the world.

Ok, assuming you have all this; Now you must have Internet service. Broadband is suggested for more FPS.(Frames Per Second) The faster the conection the more Frames you get. 30 FPS is a fast connection and the video being viewed remotely will be smooth. Lower speed internet connections will display at or below 15 FPS. Which is still ok because no one can steal anything in less than one second. So 15 FPS is really 15 snapshots of live motion video taken every Second. If it takes me 1 second to steal something then I will have 15 snapshots lined up like video that I can freeze frame and analyze. Most of the DVR's on the market only display 30 FPS while viewing from remotely. However the DVR itself may record up to 480 FPS which can only be played at the physical location of the camera system. Not by remote.

Another thing to consider before you try to view your DVR from a remote location is the type of Internet service you have. Most people have DSL or DDNS Dynamic IP Address. Which is fine if you have the type of DVR that includes a Domain Network Server website that will log your IP address if it changes. This could be a hastle if you do not plan to leave a computer on 24/7 to update your Dynamic IP address when needed. And this is the problem with Dynamic IP's; The address might change, which means if you are at the beach trying to view your security system, you might get an error saying basically you're out of luck because your IP address changed. So to prevent all this, just pay the extra money for a STATIC IP. This address never changes and you will be able to view your cameras without any hastles. Forever.

Spy Geeks will need the following to help you:

  • DVR Software, Owners Manual and Password for the DVR on site
  • Static IP address asigned to the router onsite with the user name and password for that router
  • A Network or CAT5 Cable
  • An open port on your Router that we can plug your DVR into
  • (if you only have a single port router you will have to upgrade to a 4 port type)

NOTE: Our rate to configure your DVR to your Router is valid for the greater Orlando area only. If you are farther away and still need this service you can contact any I.T. Person or any other "Geek" in your area :)
