The “brains” of a complete security camera system, the DVR is responsible for recording and accessing video from a security camera or cameras. Without a recording medium (a DVR), you will simply have a live video feed. There are many different styles of DVRs on the market. Some are standalone units that resemble a VCR or DVD player, some are disguised as wall panels, some look and function like a regular PC and yet others are made up of a video card and software. No matter which form you choose it is important to know before-hand what specs and features are important to you as not all DVRs are alike.

Most every DVR on the market has the capability of recording either continuously, when motion is detected, or based on a schedule. With newer compression technologies and larger hard drives, it is possible to record and store weeks or months’ worth of data on your DVR. As well, most all DVRs nowadays have the capability to be viewed remotely via smartphone/tablet or Internet Browser.

With most newer DVRs it is possible with CMS (Central Management System) software to view and record video cameras from multiple locations. For instance if you were to own several retail locations throughout town and wanted to record them to a central recording computer, CMS software would allow this to happen. CMS software would also be beneficial for a security company who needs to centrally monitor several DVR systems across a geographic area.

If deciding on a network IP security camera you will want to decide if you will record to a computer on the network or to a standalone network video recorder or NVR. An NVR is a type of DVR that records from megapixel digital IP security cameras either wirelessly or via network cable.
